Bombardment of Reims Cathedral. Significant “peace talk” by German representatives in the United States. German attempts to break through between Craonne and Reims are repulsed and the Saxon army “dislocated.” H.M.S. Pegasus is completely disabled while at anchor in Zanzibar Harbour by the German cruiser Königsberg, 25 being killed and 52 wounded. The Admiralty state that between September 10 and September 14 the German cruiser Emden has captured six British ships in the Bay of Bengal, sinking five of them.
