French transport Provence II. reported sunk in Mediterranean on February 26. Nearly 1,000 lives lost. Fight at Manheulles, south-east of Verdun.

The report for February 29, 1916 was updated in the April 1, 1916 edition of the Diary of the War:

Germans entrenching on the Poivre ridge, north of Verdun; lull in the fighting. Engagement between H.M. armed merchant cruiser Alcantara and German raider Greif, in the North Sea; the Greif sunk by gunfire, the Alcantara torpedoed. German seaplane raid on South-East Coast; one child killed; the seaplane falls into the sea on the return journey and is picked up by the French.
