The original Diary of the War was a column published monthly in The Times and until March 1916, each monthly column summarised the events of every day since the beginning of the war. On April 1 1916, the following statement was published:

Owing to the shortage of the paper supply and the desire for the exercise of economy, we have decided to curtail our “Diary of the War” by the omission of the events prior to February 28. Readers are asked to refer to the Diary which was printed in “The Times” of March 1, and also to preserve the monthly diaries for future reference.

Perhaps the war had lasted longer than anticipated…
