British and French progress north and south of the Somme; north of the Somme enemy momentarily regain Chipilly; British advance south of the Somme, they take Meharicourt, and by capture of Rosières and Lihons their line brought within two miles of Chaulnes; farther south French take Pierrepont, advancing over four miles to Arvillers; total prisoners 24,000 with over 200 guns. General Humbert with French Third Army strikes south-east on the enemy flank below Montdidier. Farther north on the Lys Germans evacuate more of the positions won in the April offensive, and British advance over a mile from west of Merville to Locon. Americans take Fismettes on the Vesle, with 100 prisoners.
