Second German attack on Messines Ridge heavily defeated on the front Wytschaete-Hollebeke; in the centre enemy push on from the Lys towards Bailleul, Armentières being evacuated, where Germans report capture of garrison of 3,000 men; British forced back at Estaires and Steenwerck, and behind the Lys, surrendering Merville, and give ground in the Ploegsteert region; in the south German attempt to force the Lawe, covering Béthune, heavily defeated; Germans claim 20,000 prisoners and over 200 guns in the northern battle to date. Turkish attacks near Ghoraniyeh bridge east of the Jordan and near Shechem road repulsed. One of General Northey‘s columns heavily engaged with the Germans north-east of Mozambique; severe enemy losses.

Fighting spreads to Messines Ridge; British pressed back to top of ridge and to Ploegsteert in the south; in the Armentières sector enemy crosses the Lys between Estaires and Bac St. Maur; he also crosses the Lawe at Lestrem, but is driven back; 6,000 prisoners and 100 guns claimed. Turkish offensive in Palestine north-east of Joppa; initial success negatived and our line advanced at several points. U-boat bombards Monrovia, the capital of Liberia.

Great German Attack on British Third and Fourth Armies on a 50-mile front between the Scarpe and the Oise. British positions penetrated in certain places and men forced back to reserve line, to which they conform elsewhere; 40 German divisions identified. Announced fresh column landed in Portuguese East Africa, at Mozambique, in touch with Port Amelia column 100 miles inland. British destroyers Botha and Morris and French destroyers Mehl, Magor, and Bouclier sink two German torpedo-boats in the North Sea, and later, in action with five German destroyers, which had been bombarding Dunkirk, sink one and possibly two of them. No Allied losses, but Botha damaged. British monitors bombard Ostend.

Turks retreating from Hit occupy Khan Baghdadie on the Aleppo road, 12 miles farther on. Hospital ship Guildford Castle, homeward bound from East Africa, torpedoed in Bristol Channel, but reaches port.

Official statement on meeting of Supreme War Council at Versailles; in view of speeches by Counts Hertling and Czernin decided only immediate task before it is vigorous prosecution of the war; an enlargement of powers of Council announced. Mr. Baker, American Secretary of War, announces American troops occupying certain portion of actual battlefront. British forces occupy Utarika, Lujenda Valley, Mozambique; main body of enemy retreats eastwards.

War Office announces three columns of British troops from Rovuma river, from Lake Nyasa, and from the coast in conjunction with Portuguese in pursuit of enemy forces escaped into Mozambique. Changes in Admiralty: Rear-Admiral Fremantle succeeds Sir Henry Oliver as Deputy Chief of the General Staff; Rear-Admiral Hope succeeds Sir Rosslyn Wemyss as Deputy First Sea Lord. Vice-Admiral Bacon, Commanding Dover Patrol, transferred to Ministry of Munitions.
