Archduke Joseph of Austria heavily defeated by the Russians north-east of Krasnik on the line Urzedow-Wilkolax-Bychawa; Germans repulsed between the Wieprz and the Bug. Fighting round Souchez; Arras bombarded. The Times Fund exceeds £1,500,000.

The French are masters of the whole village of Ablain in the sector north of Arras. Germans admit their retirement from Ablain. Russian offensive south of the Dniester; 7,000 prisoners taken. The Times Fund £1,333,751, inclusive of £38,215 from the sale at Christie’s.

H.M.S. Majestic is torpedoed by a submarine off the Gallipoli Peninsula. H.M.S. Auxiliary ship Princess Irene is accidentally destroyed by an explosion off Sheerness. French airmen (18) attack an enemy explosives factory at Ludwigshafen. U.S.A. steamship Nebraskan reaches Liverpool disabled by an explosion. The Queen’s Work for Women Fund, £157,286.

The enemy at Ypres uses gas over a front of five miles. French are still gaining ground. Germans claim successes on the San towards Przemysl. Official list of the new Cabinet is issued. National Relief Fund accounts, to March 31, issued. Subscriptions amounted to £4,901,000, and £1,960,000 allocated for relief.

A Zeppelin that attacked Ramsgate early this morning was chased off by Eastchurch and Westgate machines as far as the West Hinder Lightship. When off Nieuport she was attacked by eight naval machines from Dunkirk. While the First British Army has been dealing the enemy a severe blow to the south of Ypres, the French troops to the north have considerable success. The Times Fund over 1¼ million sterling.

In the La Bassée district counter-attacks are easily repulsed by the 4th Corps and the Indian Corps. The village of L’Epinette is captured by the 3rd Corps. The Admiralty report the loss of H.M. auxiliary cruiser Bayano, engaged on patrol duty, having been sunk by torpedo. The Government acquire greater part of crop of natural indigo now coming forward for the use of dye users in United Kingdom. The Duke of Connaught writes, as Grand Prior of the Order of St. John in England, to thank The Times for help in raising funds for sick and wounded.
