Second German attack on Messines Ridge heavily defeated on the front Wytschaete-Hollebeke; in the centre enemy push on from the Lys towards Bailleul, Armentières being evacuated, where Germans report capture of garrison of 3,000 men; British forced back at Estaires and Steenwerck, and behind the Lys, surrendering Merville, and give ground in the Ploegsteert region; in the south German attempt to force the Lawe, covering Béthune, heavily defeated; Germans claim 20,000 prisoners and over 200 guns in the northern battle to date. Turkish attacks near Ghoraniyeh bridge east of the Jordan and near Shechem road repulsed. One of General Northey‘s columns heavily engaged with the Germans north-east of Mozambique; severe enemy losses.

Great Allied attack around Ypres on a 15-mile front; British advance from the Lys Valley northward beyond Ypres to the Yser Canal to a depth of over two miles, taking Pilkem, St. Julien, Frezenberg, and Westhoek, and south of the Ypres-Menin road, Hollebeke, and La Basse Ville; French force passage of Yser Canal and take Steenstraate and Bixschoote; over 6,000 prisoners taken by British. Enemy attacks on Russian line near Brody; enemy approaching Czernovitz.
