French complete capture of the Lassigny massif, taking L’Alliche Farm; 33,000 to 34,000 prisoners taken since August 8 with 600 to 700 guns. British troops cross the Ancre; to the north they progress between Beaucourt-sur-Ancre and Puisfeux. German air raid on Paris. Announced British troops now hold road from Baghdad, through Persia, to Enzeli, on the Caspian Sea, whence detachments have been sent to Baku and to the eastern shore of the Caspian. Two British destroyers sunk by mines; 26 men missing.

Fall of Soissons following rapid enemy retreat; Allies hold the line of the Crise; farther south they take Arcy and Coulanges, and east of that again Gueux and Thillois; an advance in places of over six miles and over 50 villages delivered. Japanese Government, acting in concert with American Government, decide to land troops at Vladivostok. Allied forces, naval and military, land at Archangel. Two British torpedo-boards sunk by mines; five officers and 92 men lost.

Germans break through British positions west of St. Quentin and endeavour to turn the British right; British forces retiring to the line of the Somme; Germans claim 16,000 prisoners and 200 guns. Allenby crosses the Jordan and advances towards the Hedjaz Railway. British mine-sweeping sloop mined and sunk; two officers and 64 men lost.

British captures in France during February 312 prisoners. British raid south of Armentières; many German raids in Flanders, particularly on the Portuguese front near Neuve Chapelle. German attacks renewed at the Butte du Mesnil; a footing gained in positions captured by the French on February 13. Fighting on the Reims front; Germans gain an outer work near La Pompelle Fort, but lose it the next day. H.M. armed merchant cruiser Calgarian torpedoed and sunk off the Irish coast; 21 officers and 46 men lost. German destroyer and two mine-sweepers sunk in a minefield off Vlieland, near entrance of Zuyder Zee.

Naval engagement off Imbros; Goeben and Breslau emerge from the Straits and sink H.M.S. Raglan and a small monitor (M.28); south of Imbros Breslau manœuvred by H.M. destroyers Lizard and Tigress into a minefield and sunk, while Goeben, flying for safety with four enemy destroyers and an old Turkish cruiser, strikes a mine and is beached at Nagara Point, where naval aircraft attack her. Two German destroyers mined and destroyed in the North Sea; 17 survivors.

Stephen Furness torpedoed and sunk by German submarine in Irish Channel; 6 officers and 95 men lost. Three British destroyers mined or torpedoed off Dutch coast; 13 officers and 180 men lost.

Fighting in the Gulf of Riga; Germans having forced Irben Strait, the southern entrance, press Russian naval forces back to Moon Sound with loss of Russian battleship, Slava; two enemy trawlers destroyed by fire, and two torpedo-boats blown up in Russian minefield. Two British destroyers, Mary Rose and Strongbow, convoying 12 Scandinavian merchantmen, attacked by two fast and heavily armed German raiders between Shetland and Norwegian coast and sunk with nine of the escorted vessels; 88 lost on the Mary Rose and 47 on the Strongbow. American transport, Antilles, homeward bound, torpedoed and sunk; 67 out of 167 on board lost.

German troops occupy a greater part of Island of Oesel at entrance of Gulf of Riga; large naval forces take part in operation; Russians report a German Dreadnought runs into a minefield. Sir Robert Borden forms a Coalition Government in Canada.
