German advance in Russia continues towards Reval, Petrograd, Moscow, and Kieff; 9,000 prisoners to date. Allenby within four miles of Jericho; advance north of Jerusalem on a four-mile front on the Shechem road. General Marshall advances up the Euphrates and occupies Khan Abu Rayat, 14 miles north of Ramadie, while patrols advance to within 10 miles of Hit. French raid in Lorraine, east of Nancy; 525 prisoners.

Raids by Canadians near Hargicourt and Lens. Austrian attack in the Col Caprile area defeated. British air raid on Offenburg; French air raids on Thionville, Conflans, Chambley, and Metz-Sablons; Germans bomb Nancy. Mr. Asquith‘s questions on enlargement of powers of Versailles Council: Mr. Lloyd George refuses specific information in interest of Alliance and of national security; he indicates complete change in situation owing to enormous German reinforcements, and states that decisions come to by the Conference were unanimous.

Slight British advance east of Wytschaete. Great German raid on London by about 20 aeroplanes; 59 killed and 193 injured; four raiders brought down on return journey, one at mouth of Thames, two at sea 40 miles from the east coast, and a fourth off the mouth of the Scheldt; two British pilots and one observer killed, one pilot wounded, two British machines destroyed by enemy and two crashed from other causes. French aeroplanes bomb Treves, Coblentz, Ludwigshafen, and Essen as reprisal for German raids on Nancy and Epernay the day before.

Von Mackensen breaks through the Russian line on the Lublin–Cholm railway. German aeroplanes drop bombs on Nancy; French aeroplanes bombard Passchendaele on the Ypres–Roulers railway, German bivouacs in the district of Longueval to the west of Combres, German defence works near Reims, the stations of Chatel in the Argonne and Burthecourt in Lorraine, and an asphyxiating gas factory at Dornach in Alsace.

The 144th day of the war. Seven British naval airmen, assisted by H.M.S. Arethusa and Undaunted, and submarines, attack enemy warships off Cuxhaven, and are opposed by two Zeppelins, three or four seaplanes, and by submarines. Flight-Commander Francis E. T. Hewlett, R.N., missing, otherwise no casualties. A German aeroplane appears over Sheerness, but is driven away without inflicting damage. Zeppelins over Nancy.
