The 151st day of the war. H.M.S. Formidable is torpedoed by a German submarine in the English Channel; over 200 survivors landed. Violent artillery engagement on the dunes at Nieuport and Zonnebeke. Full text of the Note addressed by the United States to Great Britain, on the subject of interference with trade, published in The Times. A new decoration, “The Military Cross,” instituted. An Army Order defines the new organization of armies, each consisting of three Army Corps. National Relief Fund, £4,271,000 ; The Times Fund, £802,268; The Queen’s Fund, £119,289.

Belgrade taken by the Austrians. A seditious paper seized in Dublin. The Prince of Wales’s Fund amounts to £4,001,000. The Queen’s “Work for Women” Fund exceeds £94,330.

Perceptible progress made by the Allies, who repulsed attacks north of Arras and in the Vosges. Petrograd issues warnings against exaggerated reports of Russian successes. Those successes seem, however, to be of an important character. The National Relief Fund over £3,961,000; the Queen’s Fund, over £92,896; and The Times Fund, £679,278, the sum of £6,591 contributed yesterday being allocated thus: New Waterloo Hospital, £3,645; motor ambulances, £389; and for general use, £2,557.

Further activity of the German cruiser Emden reported; sinks a Russian cruiser and a French destroyer at Penang. Saseno occupied by Italy. General bombardment of Tsingtau begins, and Indian troops join the Anglo-Japanese forces there. The National Relief Fund, £3,546,000, the daily average subscription in October being £25,000. The Queen’s Fund for Women, £80,875, The Times Fund, £545,056.

Allies resume the offensive on their left wing. “General impression is favourable.” Main Russian Army posted on the Middle Vistula. Strength of the Germans and Austrians in this theatre estimated at about 88 Army Corps, and of the Russians at 100, not less than four million men to engage in impending battle. Germans thrice repulsed in their attempts to cross the Nethe near Antwerp, and British reinforcements arrive. The Prince of Wales‘s Fund reaches £3,000,000.

National Relief Fund reaches £2,000,000. 1st British casualty list issued 5,127.
