Germans evacuating positions on the Ancre front in the Hébuterne sector; Beaumont Hamel, Serre, Puisieux, and Bucquoy abandoned. War Office announces von Lettow Vorbeck pursued in Portuguese East Africa about 60 miles inland from the coast at Angoche.

French regain more ground on their left near Belloy and St. Maur with 400 more prisoners, but on the right Germans gain a footing over the Matz; they enter Mélicocq, but lose it again; across the Oise French abandon their salient around Choisy. New German attack towards Compiègne between the Aisne and the Forest of Villers-Cotterets. British column in Mozambique drives Von Lettow-Vorbeck across the Ligonya River.

Great battle continues on plateaux between the Aisne and the Vesle; Germans force the passage of the Vesle, 12 miles from their old line; Allies hold on the wings at the Vregny plateau and at the heights of St. Thierry; 15,000 prisoners claimed by enemy. Allies restore position south of Ypres, retaking trenches lost east of Dickebusch Lake. Americans take the German salient at Cantigny, north-west of Montdidier, with 170 prisoners. War Office announces German troops in Mozambique driven south towards the Lurio River.

British air raid on Liége railway junctions. German air raid on Paris by about 30 machines, only one of which gets through defences; 1 killed, 12 injured. Air raids on Zeebrugge; a German destroyer in the harbour sunk by a bomb. General Edwards in contact with Von Lettow Vorbeck‘s forces between Nanungu and Mahua and drives him westwards.

Italian storming party capture advanced positions at Capo Sile, north-east corner of Venetian lagoons. Great air raid on London in which some of new large Gothas participate; 44 killed and 179 injured in London; five raiders destroyed and believed two others fall in flames into the sea. German airmen bomb large group of British hospitals at Etaples, far outside battle area in France; 300 casualties. Nanungu, German headquarters in Mozambique, occupied by General Edwards.

West of the Avre Valley French defeat a German attack and take 100 prisoners. Further advance on the Baghdad-Mosul road; enemy driven over the Lesser Zab, 70 miles from Mosul; 30 more prisoners and two guns taken. Turks and Kurds announced across the Persian frontier, occupying Ushnu and Suj Bulak. New German submarine cruiser sunk by British Atlantic escort submarine off Cape St. Vincent.

German attack between Armentières and La Bassée on British and Portuguese front of nearly 10 miles; line penetrated about Neuve Chapelle and Fauquissart, and in the centre through Richebourg and Laventie; British and Portuguese fall back on the Lys between Estaires and Bac St. Maur, 3½ miles from their original positions; Givenchy entered, but Germans expelled again. Attack on French near Hangard, Amiens front, defeated. Allenby advances a mile and a half between the coast and the Jerusalem-Shechem road. Announced that since declaration of independence by King of the Hedjaz Arabs have cleared Red Sea coast for 800 miles and accounted for 40,000 Turkish troops. Mr. Lloyd George introduces new Military Service Bill.

Great German Attack on British Third and Fourth Armies on a 50-mile front between the Scarpe and the Oise. British positions penetrated in certain places and men forced back to reserve line, to which they conform elsewhere; 40 German divisions identified. Announced fresh column landed in Portuguese East Africa, at Mozambique, in touch with Port Amelia column 100 miles inland. British destroyers Botha and Morris and French destroyers Mehl, Magor, and Bouclier sink two German torpedo-boats in the North Sea, and later, in action with five German destroyers, which had been bombarding Dunkirk, sink one and possibly two of them. No Allied losses, but Botha damaged. British monitors bombard Ostend.

British and Portuguese raids on Armentières and Cambrai fronts. French raid near Reims. British air raid on Mannheim; 38 raids into Germany since October and 448 tons of explosives dropped. Prime Ministers and Foreign Ministers of the Entente issue a note on German crimes against the Russian people; they refuse to recognize the Russo-German peace treaty. Holland accepts with certain reservations Allied terms for use of Dutch shipping in American and Entente ports in exchange for food.
