Italian resistance on the Lower Piave stiffening; retreat in the Val Sugana, Cismon being occupied by the enemy. General Allenby three miles from Joppa; over 9,000 prisoners since October 31. British troops occupy Chivata, German East Africa. Announced British captures on all front since beginning of war, 166,000 prisoners and over 800 guns; total captured by British on Western front, 101,534 since July 1, 1916.

Mr. Lloyd George in Paris on necessity for Allied War Council, to want of which he attributes Serbian, Rumanian, and Italian disasters. Enemy establish a bridgehead across the Lower Piave at Zenson, 20 miles north-east of Venice; Italians evacuate Fonzaso and part of the Val Sugana, overlooking the Brenta.

Turks evacuate Wadi Hesi and Ascalon; they retreat on Hebron and Jerusalem with loss of 70 guns and 10,000 casualties. Italians on the Piave; enemy descent in Trentino, down the Val Sugana, taking ruins of Asiago; General Fayolle announced in command of French troops in Italy. Announced Allied Conference at Rapallo has decided to create a supreme political council of the Allies for the Western Front, to be assisted by a permanent Military Committee, consisting of Generals Foch, Cadorna, and Wilson; General Diaz succeeds Cadorna as Italian Generalissimo.
